Europe's foremost maker of land systems, Rheinmetall Defence boasts a complete family of armoured vehicles specifically designed to support Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 main battle tanks.

In 2003 Rheinmetall furnished the Swiss Army with a prototype of its unique Armoured Engineer Vehicle 3, the Kodiak, for intensive trials. The Kodiak is being jointly developed and produced by Rheinmetall Defence and Switzerland's RUAG Land Systems, which also cooperated to finance the project. Rheinmetall is tasked with overall responsibility for the system, and is also in charge of marketing the new vehicle. Thus far, the Kodiak has been ordered by Switzerland, Sweden and the Netherlands; delivery commences at the end of 2009.

Apart from its prime function as a heavy-duty combat engineer vehicle the Kodiak can serve in a mine-breaching role, protecting troops deployed on hazardous missions. It offers a powerful tool for use in military operations as well as for disaster relief operations.

Offering excellent protection against landmines and ballistic threats, the AEV 3 is an attractive procurement option for many of the world's armies.
